Happy New Year 2016!

Hey there, I've been away for a while (again).
I realize I must make these disappearances scarce.
A lot of things have transpired in the recent past and I've not written about any of these things.
I call this my literary abode and I've not done what I do best - relate my experiences.

So, here's a snapshot of what I've been up to in the past year that I haven't written about:
- A few trips to:
  • Chennai (my first experience of a big, fat, Bong wedding)
  • Goa 
  • Yercaud 
  • Hampi (a family reunion)
- I visited several new watering holes around town
- Finished a beautiful book called 'Lean In' by Sheryl Sandberg and downloaded many more on my Kindle
- Watched some wonderful movies:
  • Spectre
  • Bajirao Mastani
  • The Hateful Eight
  • Sicario
  • The Theory of Everything
  • I Am Ali
Ugh! the list is exhausting as you can see and I'm sure I've still missed out on a few other things.
It's too late for me to start writing about each one of these now. So what I'm going to do is start over - with a promise.

A promise to record all (or at least, most of) my experiences this year, no matter how long or short. Call that a resolution, if you will. 

What I'm also going to do is a review of Bajirao Mastani as my next post - because well, there are some things I feel strongly about and they haven't found a release yet.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

This is a fresh out of the oven type thing. The film hasn't even finished running credits as I write this piece. That's how compelled I felt to write about this movie. There's so much to be said and yet so little that was. I'm truly astounded by Ben Stiller's take on something so mundane as a closet-hero seeking something more from his life. Walter Mitty is no one but he's everyone. Every one of us who wants to go out there, do something we've never done before, look outside of our comfort zone - but we don't. Man of Steel: Superman reinvented

Superman is my favorite superhero. And I can't say I've been happy with the way he's been depicted in the movies made till date. I mean cocky with a wry sense of humor is great, and works really well with the ladies too, but somewhere down the line I believe Superman stopped being taken seriously. Could be because of that glued hairstyle with just one curl on the forehead (which not once fell out of place, no matter how much he flew around the stratosphere) or the famous red briefs over the blue suit. And I don't think it has anything to do with the new face of Superman - Henry Cavill (drool!) - or his elaborate background story. When art meets food. But why?

It is the age where not only do your looks count, even how your food looks counts (for something I don't know either). I don't recall ever saying food was 'gorgeous' before Gary, George and Matt (of Masterchef Australia fame) waltzed right into my living room and introduced me to the new food vocab. Masterchef Australia - They're here & they're hungry! First up, it's odd that we watch a show that is culturally so different from ours. Then, we watch people cook dishes with ingredients we don't even consider 'food' in the first place (pheasant, quail eggs, squid ink et al.) We watch their top chefs drool and praise the food and feel good about it (can't say why). And we immerse ourselves in their 'oohs & aahs' and indulge in some desi version of comfort food while watching them cook on TV!
